Our Backyard

Birding

The McAllister Inn is incredibly fortunate be located in the heart of birding and bird breeding country right on the edges of the Pacific and Central Flyways. Classic, free range, Mountain, Upland, Riparian and Wetland habitat are located, literally, right out the back door of your room.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks lists our state's breeding population of birds at 250 species, with another 170 migratory or incidental species just passing through. A safe bet would put 200+ of these species in the valley at any point in time between April 1st and November 30th.

The list of observable birds is awe inspiring:http://fieldguide.mt.gov/displayFamily.aspx?class=Aves

Wild Flowers

Green descends on the valley in mid-April, snow comes and goes, rain falls. Somewhere under the soil life is triggered, perennials yawn, seeds germinate and the sun and the weather take it from there. Early May comes and non-descript greens morph into every color imaginable as they push to strut their flowers and show their stuff.

Fishing

The Upper Madison

Commonly called the “50 Mile Riffle” or the “Upper”, the stretch of the Madison River
between Quake Lake and Ennis Lake is the quintessential American trout stream.
Any fisher, regardless of age or experience who can make the pilgrimage to this river
will be justly rewarded with the ample opportunity to catch quality browns, rainbows
and whitefish, in a setting comparable to few places in the world.

Ennis Lake is the last leg of this epic stretch of river an (not coincidentally) the location of the McAllister Inn .
This is where, whether on the sticks or just kicked back in your seat enjoying the view, visions
of the ones you caught and the ones that got away will tug at your mind.  Life will slow
to the beat of the oars on the water and the only real question in life will become:

"When do we do it again?"
